Candidate's Comments:
RE #7: Idaho already passed the version of this everyone's asking for: no kid account without a parent's permission, addictive features stripped out, data collection banned. House Bill 542, signed in April. I read it and voted no on the floor. Credit where it's due: it goes after the platforms themselves instead of the app stores and device makers. That's the right target. Meta ran five lobbyists through the building trying to kill it, and that says something. But the bill exempts any account that's been open continuously for seven years. No age check, no parental permission, nothing. So the girl who lied about her age at ten and has been on Instagram ever since gets nothing at seventeen. Verifying old accounts is expensive. The most damaged kids got carved out to protect a balance sheet, and we called it child protection. It also says parents can't waive the requirements. You understand the risks, you make an informed call about your own child, and the state says your judgment doesn't count. So we're mandating that billion-dollar companies monitor your kid for you while overriding your authority over your own family. That's not conservative. I don't know what it is, but it's not that. The rest is compliance theater. Platforms are off the hook if they used "reasonable means" to comply, which is where their lawyers will live for the next decade. A flagged kid gets 30 days to dispute while infinite scroll and autoplay keep running. And it only applies to companies over a billion in revenue, so Discord walks and the next TikTok walks. Courts have already struck this model down in Arkansas, Ohio, Utah and Mississippi, so the likely ending is an injunction and years of appeals on the state's dime. The goal is right. This version exempts the kids who need it most and hands the platforms a liability shield on the way out. Meta's lobbying for weaker. I'm pushing for stronger. Write one that actually kneecaps the companies hurting these kids and I'll vote for it.
